Shri Sanjay Garg was born on 29th Dec. 1957 in a family that was known for patriotism. His paternal uncle (Tauji) Shri Prem Nath Garg was one of the leading lights of the Gandhian breed, in Saharanpur, and all the elder members were engaged in social work. With such family background Shri Sanjay Garg grew into a young man who was deeply concerned with social problems. Even as a student, he began raising the banner of ravolt against all forms of exploitation. While at college he joined the All India Student Federation and served as its District President and later as Vice-President U.P. Branch. From 1975 to 1980 he remained in the forefront of the social activities of the federation and it was during this period that he made his mark as a zealous and sincere social worker. In 1983 he participated as a 'Satyagrahi' in a movement launched on the issues of dual educational policy, unemployment relief and right to work. He courted arrest on these issues in Dehradun where he remained in jail for 15 days. To sensitize people to the problems of the poor and social ills he actively participated as a member of Initiative Group-IPTA. He was one of the founder members of IPTA Saharanpur and served as its President for many years. Through IPTA he engaged people's attention to the evils in our society. Shri Sanjay Garg has always been very sensitive to the problems of the labour class. He worked for the rope makers of Dhar actively cooperating with Vikalp - a social organization. He created the right conditions for the formation of 'Dhar Kshetra Mazdoor Morcha' which flourished rapidly and is now engaged in the task of the upliftment of the landless peasants and labourers. Shri Sanjay Garg is one of the founder members of a very successful social organization. DISHA at Chilkana, Sultanpur. This organization has changed the life of the people at Yamuna Khadar area by speaking and fighting on behalf of them. Shri Sanjay Garg brought a rare honor to Saharanpur when the American Biographical institute, North Carolina recognized his "exemplary performance" and included his name in the ninth edition of the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership. He is a life member of the International Red Cross Society.

He has been serving on various committees of the House as a member. In 1997-98 he was made a member of the Sales Tax standing Committee and also of Tourism Standing Committee. In 1997-98 he served as a member of the Joint Committee of PUC. He is a member of the U.P. Vidhan Sabha Library Committee and a Trade Tax Standing Committee. He is a life member of Commonwealth Parliament Association, U.P. Branch. Among politicians and social workers of the present generation Shri Sanjay Garg stands a very distinguished face in the crowd. His political career has been pleasantly and impeccably free from the usual stains that besmirch the image of politicians. His personality and character have been above board. He has rightly earned the image that projects him as a devoted, caring, loving, honest and thoughtful politician. Shri Sanjay Garg is a fine combination of an honest politician and an untiring, deeply concerned social worker. Truly, his political activities are extension and expression of his social work. Politics and social work are the ligancy he inherited from his family. As an orator he is very forceful and his oratory in the Vidhan Sabha has drawn government's attention to problems of the people residing in Saharanpur. It is a matter of great pleasure that Shri Sanjay Garg has not got lost in sheer politics. He has continuously nurtured his taste in dramatics, literary activities and cultural programmes. he divides his time between politics and social work. Even today he is easily available to the people who need his support. On 9th March 2008, Sanjay Garg was again in news for leaving Samajwadi Party (SP) and joining Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP). Thousands of his supporters who were in SP owing to their personal loyalty with Sanjay Garg also deserted Samajwadi Party and joined BSP with him. In fact, almost the entire Saharanpur unit of SP supported Sanjay's decision of changing party. On 9th April, 2008 - exactly after one month of Sanjay's joining BSP, the BSP Supremo and Chief Minister, U.P. Ms. Mayawati nominated Sanjay Garg as the Co-ordinator of BSP Vaish Samajik Bhaichara Committee for Saharanpur, Meerut and Moradabad Commissionery On 25th April, three more Commissioneries - Agra, Bareilly and Aligarh were also handed over to Mr. Sanjay Garg. Recently, Mr. Sanjay Garg has been nominated as the Chairman of the U.P. Trade Tax and Registration Advisory Committee - thus conferring upon him the rank of State Minister in Mayawati Cabinet. |
